A dark-finish fiberglass plunge pool, precisely detailed paving and an illuminated garden transformed an underused corner-lot backyard into a high-end, resort-style retreat. Inspired by modern Italian architecture, the design brings together space for relaxing, gardening and gathering, with premium materials and carefully balanced details throughout. One of its most personal features began with something the homeowners already owned: natural stone steps carrying memories of their parents.

Resort-Style Backyard Design in Milton
Referred to MILTONSTONE by a family member, the homeowners wanted a fresh direction for their double-lot property in Milton. Their existing paving and layout no longer suited their tastes or how they wanted to spend time outdoors. Despite having one of the larger properties on their street, they felt much of the backyard was underused.
Their inspiration came from a resort they had visited: modern, simple and bold. They wanted clean lines, premium materials and a landscape that would be easy to maintain. Gardening remained important, so the brief called for a deliberate place to plant without filling the entire yard with demanding garden beds.
Fiberglass Plunge Pool & Techo-Bloc Paving
The project brought together design planning and construction around an Aquarino fiberglass plunge pool by Azoria. Its dark, reflective finish anchors the space, with saltwater treatment and automated pool and garden lighting supporting convenient everyday enjoyment.
Techo-Bloc Blu Grande paving in Shale Grey creates a calm surrounding terrace, contrasted with Hexa pavers in Onyx Black. The patio-door landings combine Raffinato coping in Greyed Nickel with carefully centred Hexa paving. The garden wall pairs Brandon Wall in Onyx Black with Raffinato coping in Shale Grey.
Italian-Inspired Landscape Architecture
The homeowners gave MILTONSTONE creative freedom to develop a modern Italian-inspired landscape. Their direction was clear: distinctive and bold, with restraint. Symmetry was central to the brief. Centred paving patterns, aligned joints and balanced landings bring order to the composition, while contrasting colours and textures give the space its character.
Pool Installation & Landscape Construction
MILTONSTONE handled the permit application process and drawing submissions, and coordinated underground utility locates before excavation. The pool was craned into the backyard, and a master electrician was brought in to upgrade the electrical panel for the project. From demolition to completion, construction took approximately two to three weeks.
Garden Walls & in-lite Landscape Lighting
A long garden wall extends along approximately two-thirds of the property, giving the homeowner a generous planting area within the streamlined layout. Integrated in-lite lighting brings definition to the garden edge after sunset, complementing the pool and illuminated steps.
Custom Patio Steps & Interlocking Landings
The homeowners described the original patio-door transition as awkward when carrying food outside to the barbecue. MILTONSTONE created a generous upper landing and new steps, providing a comfortable place to stand immediately outside the door. Integrated lighting helps define the change in level in the evening.
Custom Natural Stone Bench & Banas Stonework
The existing black Banas natural stone steps had belonged to the homeowners’ late parents. When Francesco Pettinelli, MILTONSTONE’s Project Leader and Client Relations Specialist, learned their significance, he found a way to keep that history within the new landscape.
The stone was repurposed into a custom bench. Its substantial, textured surfaces complement the new paving while preserving a connection that could never have been replaced with new materials. The bench became both a practical place to sit and a meaningful part of the project.
Custom Garden Building Design & Construction
What began as a plan to repaint the old shed became a purpose-built garden structure. Custom double doors, high-level windows, lighting, aluminum roofing and black aluminum trim give it an architectural presence that belongs with the rest of the backyard.
Backyard Excavation & Paver Base Preparation
Construction included extensive excavation and aggregate installation, with approximately two feet of gravel added throughout the backyard, according to the project account. Installation footage documents preparation and the pool being lifted into place, connecting the finished photographs with the work that made the transformation possible.
