Deck, Pergola & Fence Care for Ontario Homes
Keep the outdoor structures in your high-end landscape looking considered long after installation. Start with the actual material and finish—not a one-size-fits-all cleaning routine.
Identify your decking, woodwork and finish
Keep the manufacturer, product range, colour, installer and finish details in your handover records. Wood, composite decking, painted surfaces and metal components can require different care. Photograph the installation when new so you have a useful reference during later inspections.
Composite deck cleaning: check the product generation
Trex publishes different instructions for newer high-performance boards and earlier composite products. Its guidance allows specific cleaning methods for some ranges that it does not recommend for others. Look up the exact decking product before choosing a pressure washer, cleaner or stain treatment. Do not assume a method used on a neighbouring deck is suitable for yours.
Wood pergolas and fences: build a finish-specific schedule
Ask for the coating manufacturer’s instructions, including preparation, cleaning and recoating requirements. Record the last application and inspect exposed areas before arranging maintenance. Avoid committing to an annual staining programme without checking the finish and condition first. A maintenance appointment should begin with assessment rather than an automatic application of another coating.
A practical seasonal walkthrough
Look for loose components, surface changes, damaged boards, gate movement and water collecting where it did not collect before. Record concerns with photographs and their location. Have suspected structural or guard problems assessed before continuing to use the affected area. Keep cleaning products and techniques consistent with the relevant manufacturer’s instructions.
Keep aftercare connected to the original project
Maintain one record of care instructions, receipts, product warranties and repair visits. Ask your project contact which follow-up services are included in your agreement and which require a separate appointment. This makes it easier to coordinate a deck, pavilion and garden as one outdoor living space.
