New Sod Care & Lawn Establishment in Ontario
A freshly installed lawn needs an establishment plan. Arrange water access, daily checks and clear care responsibilities before the sod arrives.
Water promptly and follow the grower’s instructions
Greenhorizons advises watering within hours of installation and adjusting establishment care to rainfall and conditions. Obtain the current instructions for your supplied sod and ask the installer to explain how they apply to your soil, exposure and irrigation coverage. Do not leave the initial watering until the next day.
Check coverage rather than relying only on a timer
Observe the lawn during watering and check for missed areas. Sod Solutions highlights seams and perimeter edges as places that can dry out. Take rainfall into account and avoid standing water. Ask your installer how to assess moisture and when to change the programme as roots establish.
Plan the first mowing around establishment
Sod Solutions recommends confirming that roots have attached before the first mow. If pieces lift during mowing, stop and allow more establishment time. Follow the grower’s mowing-height guidance for the grass supplied rather than using a generic setting.
Keep a simple establishment record
Record installation day, the sod supplier, the written care instructions and who is responsible for each check. Note rainfall, watering adjustments and changes you observe. Photographs from the same viewpoint make it easier to explain a concern to the installer.
If you are away, nominate someone who can visit and follow the agreed care plan. Confirm they have water access, timer instructions and your project contact’s details. A handover email is useful only if the person caring for the lawn receives it.
Coordinate the lawn with your new landscape
Before handover, discuss how ongoing deliveries, furniture placement and other trades will be managed around the new lawn. Ask when the installed sod is ready for its intended use. Keep the planting and lawn-care instructions separate so irrigation decisions account for both parts of the garden.
Report concerns with useful information
Send the affected location, installation date, recent photographs and a short description of watering and weather. Ask for an assessment before applying treatments by guesswork. Keep any advice and follow-up visits in your project record, together with the terms of your actual installation agreement.
