Start with the way the driveway works

A driveway needs to accommodate everyday parking, garage access and the route to the front door. Before selecting a finish, establish the usable width, vehicle movements and any changes to the existing layout.

Record what happens during rainfall and snowmelt. Water collecting near a garage or across a walkway needs to be understood before the finished elevations are set. Photographs of the site in wet conditions can be useful alongside a measured assessment.

Replacement, extension or a new surface

A replacement driveway involves the existing surface and what lies beneath it. The quotation should describe demolition, removal, access for equipment and the proposed preparation. An extension adds questions about boundaries, adjoining finishes and any approvals relevant to the property.

An overlay is a different scope from replacing the underlying slab. Covering a visibly worn surface does not establish that the existing construction is suitable to remain. Review its condition and the causes of deterioration before deciding on the approach.

Select the finish with the entrance in mind

Compare finish samples with the house exterior, porch and adjoining paving. Discuss plain, decorative or stamped options against your expectations for appearance and upkeep. Borders, transitions and joint locations should be considered in the layout rather than improvised around a finished pour.

The written specification should cover the intended construction, any required reinforcement, joints and finishing arrangements. Structural details and dimensions are determined for the actual site; a generic driveway description is not a substitute for that specification.

Compare the entire installation

Ask whether the price includes removal, base preparation, forming, the selected concrete finish, reinstatement of disturbed edges and cleanup. Identify utility or drainage work separately so quotations can be compared on the same basis.

Before work begins, agree on access to the home, where equipment will be positioned and when the new surface may be used. Curing, protection and return-to-service instructions should come from the project team for the installed work. Keep the care instructions and the written warranty exclusions with your project documents.
