Ipe & Hardwood Decking in Oakville & Toronto GTA
Rich natural grain, carefully resolved edges and a clear plan for long-term care.
An outdoor room with a considered material palette.
A hardwood deck appeals to homeowners who value the texture and variation of real timber. Milton Stone’s custom deck offering includes hardwood options such as Ipe, considered alongside the architecture, landscape and intended maintenance routine. Product availability and the selected timber specification should be confirmed before a design is priced as a final construction scope.
Begin with the timber and finish specification
Ask which species, board dimensions and grade are proposed. Review samples with the understanding that natural variation is part of the material. Establish the desired finished appearance and discuss how exposure and care can change it over time.
For Ipe or another specialty hardwood, request supply information and discuss sourcing expectations before purchase. If a particular certification or origin is important, it should be documented for the actual material supplied rather than assumed from the species name.
Detail the deck as a complete assembly
The appearance of a hardwood deck depends on more than the main floor. Board ends, joints, perimeter trims, fasteners and stairs all deserve attention in the drawings. Ask how the selected material will be installed and how the proposed structure supports that approach.
Built-in seating can make efficient use of space, but it also fixes the arrangement. Check the furniture plan, access to the garden and maintenance access before deciding which elements should be permanent. Keep future access to adjacent walls and services in the design.
Plan the relationship with stone and planting
Hardwood can provide a warm visual contrast to stone paving. Choose the timber and stone together, then review the transition in level and the route between the two surfaces. Garden beds and screening should support the use of the deck without making inspection and cleaning difficult.
If the deck is part of a wider backyard renovation, coordinate construction access and sequencing. An agreed plan can keep later landscaping work from depending on access across a newly completed finish.
Price the selected design, including care expectations
Compare estimates using the same species, board specification, area, stair design and railing allowance. Include delivery, installation details and any initial finishing in the written scope. Specialty timber availability can influence selections, so confirm substitutions before they are made.
Discuss the intended care routine before committing to the material. Keep the installer’s and product supplier’s instructions for cleaning and refinishing. A written finish specification is more useful than a general promise that the timber will always look new.
Questions before you begin.
Can you guarantee a particular Ipe colour?
Natural timber varies. Agree on samples, grade and finish expectations, while allowing for variation between boards and changes with exposure.
Should I choose hardwood or composite?
Compare the look you prefer, willingness to maintain timber, product availability and complete installed cost. Milton Stone can assess both options within the same deck layout.
