Cedar Decks in Oakville & Toronto GTA
Natural wood, considered details and a deck that feels connected to the garden.
An outdoor room with a considered material palette.
Cedar is an option for homeowners who prefer visible wood grain and the character of a natural material. Milton Stone designs wood decks as part of the complete outdoor space, from the first step outside the house to the connection with a patio or lawn. Selecting cedar also means deciding how you want the wood to look as it ages.
Decide how you want the wood to age
Discuss the difference between preserving a chosen colour with a suitable finish and allowing a more weathered appearance. The care routine should follow the selected wood and finish specifications. Ask to see examples of both newer and weathered surfaces so the decision reflects more than an installation-day photograph.
Wood naturally varies. Review the proposed grade, visible knots and colour variation before approving the material. If a highly uniform appearance is a priority, compare the cedar selection with alternative decking materials before construction starts.
Make the small details part of the drawing
A cedar deck can feel very different depending on board direction, border treatment, stair proportions and the design of the perimeter. Plan these details alongside door positions and the garden layout. Built-in benches and privacy screens should have an agreed size and location rather than being improvised once the main platform is finished.
Allow space for furniture and everyday circulation. A dining table that fits on paper can still interrupt the route to the garden when occupied. Mark out the main furniture zones before settling on the deck’s dimensions.
Separate the decking choice from the structural scope
Cedar surface boards are only one part of a deck. Ask what is specified for the support structure, connections, stairs and railings. On an existing deck, confirm whether the scope is a surface replacement, a partial repair or a complete rebuild. The estimate should describe those boundaries clearly.
Coordinate any lighting, screening and adjacent planting early. Future access to maintain the timber and nearby house surfaces is worth planning before enclosed edges or fixed seating are installed.
Budget for installation and ongoing care
Compare quotes with the same area, wood specification, stair layout, railing scope and finish allowance. Ask whether initial finishing is included, excluded or scheduled separately. Keep product care instructions with the handover documents so future cleaning and refinishing use compatible methods.
Questions before you begin.
Will a cedar deck keep its original colour?
Its appearance changes with exposure and the chosen maintenance approach. Discuss the finish and care schedule before deciding on a colour expectation.
Can cedar be combined with a stone patio?
Yes. A coordinated design can use wood for a raised seating area and stone for a garden-level terrace, with the connecting steps and elevations resolved together.
